Goumenissa 2007, Tatsis

Goumenissa 2007, Tatsis

Date Tasted: 09/2022

The PDO Goumenissa region in northern Macedonia extends to the southeastern foothills of Mount Paiko. The area is famous for its red wines, a blend of Xinomavro and Negoska. According to the legislation, the two varieties must be vinified together, and the wine must be aged for at least 12 months in oak. In addition, the proportion of Negoska in the blend must be at least 20 per cent. Also, the cultivation altitude must be no less than 150m.

Appearance: Medium ruby colour, still youthful.

Nose: It has aged perfectly and has gained layers and tertiary aromas like a forest floor and mushrooms yet still keeping the primary fruit aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry. It is a pleasure to smell it.

Palate: It is medium-bodied with high acidity and tannins that need more time to soften. It has an excellent balance with complex flavours of red berries and earthy notes. The aftertaste is complex and almost lengthy.

Drink or Hold: It is delicious now but can evolve more in the next 6-7 years.

Food Pairing: Pasta with red sauce and tuna.
