It is remarkable for a producer to possess an entire premier cru vineyard in Burgundy. Such ownership is a rarity, a testament to the producer's dedication and long family tradition.

It is typical for the vineyards in Burgundy to be divided among multiple owners. It is not unusual for several people to own a row or even a few vines in a single plot. In the early 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte introduced inheritance laws aimed at equalising property distribution among successors. These laws, known as the Napoleonic Code, mandated that property, including vineyards, be divided equally among children upon the owner's death. As a result, vineyard parcels were further fragmented with each generation. So, the term 'monopole' refers to a vineyard or a specific plot of land that is owned entirely by a single winery or producer. The unique 'terroir' of each plot, which includes factors such as soil composition, climate, and topography, contributes to the distinct characteristics of the wine produced from it.
