The 2016 vintage was challenging for the area, and the wines express it, especially if you have tried the 2015 marvellous vintage. I visit the winery every September for the last three years. It is located at the foot of Amiata volcano, in the heart of the region, which is the cause for the area's volcanic soil. Marco is the owner and is very friendly and always eager to welcome you and guide your tasting.
Montecucco DOCG certainly is not so famous as the neighbour Brunello di Montalcino, but in wine, style is the closest one. The law allowed adding a small percentage of other varieties, but Peteglia winery uses only Sangiovese from the privately-owned vineyards. If you ever pass from there, make a stop is worth the try.
Appearance: Medium garnet colour.
Nose: Pronounced aromatic intensity black fruit and oak on top, surrounded by spices, black tea and leather.
Palate: Game, kirsch, and cooked fruits on the palate; the fruit tend to be red with high acidity, high tannins, high well-defined alcohol, full body and medium aftertaste.
Hold: Hold it in the cellar for at least 5 years since it has the potential to develop great results.
Food Pairing: It paired perfectly with lamb in the oven.
