Date Tasted: 12/2024

Commandaria is a historic sweet wine from Cyprus. It is often regarded as the oldest named wine still in production, with origins dating back over 3,000 years. Made primarily from the indigenous Xynisteri and Mavro grape varieties, the grapes are sun-dried to concentrate their sugars before fermentation. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, developing a rich, complex character with notes of dried fruits, caramel, chocolate, and spices.

Renowned for its deep history and exceptional quality, Commandaria was famously enjoyed by the Crusaders and later recognised by Richard the Lionheart as the “wine of kings and the king of wines.” Today, it holds Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status and remains one of Cyprus’ most treasured wines.

🍷 Appearance: Deep amber-brown colour.

👃 Nose: Rich and complex, offering aromas of roasted coffee, caramelised nuts, dried figs, dates, and sweet spices, with subtle hints of chocolate and a touch of Vinsanto-like oxidative character.

👅 Palate: Sweet yet beautifully balanced by medium-plus acidity. Medium-bodied with intense, layered flavours of raisins, toffee, apricot jam, and roasted almonds, leading to a velvety texture.

💞 Finish: Exceptionally long and lingering, with deep dried fruit and spices notes.

🍷 Drink: Enjoy now or cellar for the next 10 years.

🍽️ Food Pairing: Commandaria pairs beautifully with blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton, as their saltiness balances the wine’s sweetness. It also complements dark chocolate desserts, baklava, hazelnut tart, and spiced fruitcakes.
