Auksinis Maceration 2016, Sébastien Riffault
Date Tasted: 3/2021
The truth is that I am not a big fan of Orange Wines. Most of the time, they are too funky for me, and even if funkiness is at an acceptable level, they are unbalanced since they have rich flavour but lack acidity. But Auksinis from Sébastien Riffault is a marvellous wine and a great example of how Orange Wines should be.
Appearance: The colour is somewhere between amber and brown, and it reminds Sherry instead of Sauvignon Blanc.
Nose: The wine punching you with cooked apple and peach, tomato leaf, delicate floral notes, cumin and salty caramel. It is pretty exciting.
Palate: The nice complexity continues on the palate, and despite the ripe character, it shows an undeniable freshness. The almost high acidity balances the concentrated flavours precisely, and the finish is so pleasant.
Drink or Hold: It is already 5 years old, and it looks too young.
Food Pairing: Whatever strong flavour you have would be mutch well. In my case, I prepared pasta with a pretty hot sauce based on green bell peppers, tomato, soutzouki, pink pepper and some hot spices. The pairing was just astonishing.
