Zweigelt is the most widespread grape in Austria. It was created in 1922 by Austrian botanist and oenologist Dr. Fritz Zweigelt. By combining the Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent varieties, Zweigelt developed a grape that embodies the best characteristics of both. The variety is named after its creator, but for many years, it was known as "Rotburger."

Zweigelt thrives in various soils and climates, making it easy to cultivate. It is resistant to cold and has high productivity. The Zweigelt grapes are medium-sized with thin skins and a deep red colour. The ripening occurs relatively early, allowing cultivation in regions with shorter growing periods. Viticulturists highly appreciate the variety's resistance to diseases and its adaptability to various cultivation practices. Besides Austria, Zweigelt is also cultivated in the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia.
