Meta Assyrtiko 2018, Pieria Eratini Winery
Date Tasted: 8/2021
The category of Orange Wines is one of the toughest, if not the toughest, winemaker's challenges to create a drinkable result and even more to craft a great one. So many things can go wrong. The prolonged period with the skin grapes into the juice reduces the acidity. Also, it is possible to develop a strong bitter taste from the extraction. And finally, the oxidative character common in that category is sometimes far from acceptable and makes the wine monotonous. But if the winemaker manages all with care and passion and has the know-how, then the result can be one of its kind, like Meta Assyrtiko.
Appearance: The colour is deep bronze.
Nose: It is just breathtaking! The complexity and the switching between the aromas are unique. Also, the transformation as the hour passes is meditative. It starts with caramel and marzipan. Then some floral notes. Peaches, quince, cumin and honey are there with wet gravel and so on.
Palate: Durability and steel nerve are the words. Full body with tenacious flavours. Surprisingly active tannins. The high acidity boosts everything with energy. And a non-ending aftertaste full of candied fruits.
Drink or Hold: Drink it now for a memorable wine experience and store some bottles for future use.
Food Pairing: The pairing with pasta with red sauce, octopus and sujuk were impeccable.
