Rapsani Old Vines 2015, Dougos Winery

Date Tasted: 3/2023

Rapsani is a wine region in Greece located in the foothills of Mount Olympus. It is known for producing red wines primarily made from the Xinomavro grape variety, blended with smaller amounts of Krassato and Stavroto. Rapsani wines are renowned for their rich flavours, high acidity, and firm tannins.

The Rapsani region has a long winemaking history, dating back to ancient times. The area's vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 250 to 800 meters (820 to 2,625 feet) above sea level, contributing to the unique characteristics of the wines produced there.

Rapsani wines often exhibit flavours of red and black fruits, such as cherry, raspberry, and plum, along with herbal and earthy notes. They can be enjoyed young, but many Rapsani wines have excellent ageing potential, developing further complexity and smoothness over time.

Appearance: The medium garnet colour suggests some maturity in the wine.

Nose: It has evolved beautifully, showcasing a complex array of aromas. Intense raspberry notes and herbal elements like bay leaves, rosemary, and thyme are present. There's also a hint of tomato and a layer of spice, adding further depth to the wine's aroma profile.

Palate: It delivers a marvellous experience on the palate. Intense flavours of red berries, such as raspberry, are accompanied by caramel and earthy undertones, enhancing the wine's complexity. The tannins are fine, smooth yet still prominent, indicating the wine's structure. The balance between acidity and tannins is excellent, contributing to a well-rounded taste. The aftertaste is long and complex, emphasising the wine's depth.

Drink: It is at its best.

Food Pairing: Grilled sausage stuffed with herbs.
