Tignanello 2018, Antinori
Date Tasted: 9/2021
Tignanello is an iconic wine, and not by luck. It is one of the wines that influenced Italian wine history and helped the Chianti region overcome the quality problems, bad reputation, and undervalued prices.
It was the first Sangiovese blended with non-indigenous varieties and the first matured in barrique barrels. Furthermore, it was the kick-starter wine for the category of Super Tuscans.
Most wine critics claim that Tignanello is an underpriced fine wine since similar wines cost triple or more than the retail price of Tignanello, and that is a good argument.
The production is around 350.000 bottles per year.
Appearance: The colour is deep yet shiny purple.
Nose: It has a mix of red and dark berries with dried fruit, some beautiful herbal notes with the support of spices and tobacco.
Palate: Although everything is high, the balance is exceptional. The forest fruits are intense. It has chewy tannins and high acidity. It is bold and elegant at the same time with a long aftertaste.
Hold: It is far away from its best.
Food Pairing: It paired perfectly with Pastirma and cheese stuffed with pepper, although meat-based dishes are essential.
