Mov Prephylloxera 2017, Petrakopoulos

Date Tasted: 10/2024

Mavrodaphne is one of Greece’s most respected black grape varieties, with the potential to produce exceptional, world-class wines. Combined with the pre-phylloxera vine treasures on the Ionian Islands, you can experience stunning offerings such as the renowned Mov by Petrakopoulos.

While primarily associated with the Peloponnese, Mavrodaphne is also cultivated in limited quantities on the Ionian Islands, particularly in Cephalonia. Here, it is frequently used to create dry wines, often blended with other local varieties. A rare clone of Mavrodaphne, known as Thiniatiko, can be found in small quantities on the island, yielding even richer and more complex red wines. Also, recent studies have revealed that the grape Augoustiatis, predominantly found on Zakynthos, is genetically identical to Mavrodaphne.

Due to regulations, producers cannot use the name Mavrodaphne on the label if the wine is classified as dry. This limitation restrains the recognition of this remarkable grape, which deserves to be known for its potential.

🍷 Appearance: Deep ruby colour without any sign of ageing.

👃 Nose: Remarkable depth and complexity on the nose, showcasing a captivating Mediterranean aromatic profile. Notes of dried herbs, wet stone, ripe red berries, and fragrant bay leaf intertwine, creating an attractive bouquet.

👅 Palate:  Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, this wine bursts with intense flavours. The palate is enriched with layers of oregano, thyme, and bay leaf, complemented by sundried tomato, allspice, clove, and a hint of citrus from orange. Ripe strawberries and red cherries add a luscious fruitiness, while the fine, gentle tannins contribute to the wine’s elegance.

💞 Finish: The perfect balance and the long-lasting savoury finish that is incredibly satisfying, leaving you craving another glass as soon as it’s empty.

🍷 Drink: Enjoy now, but it has the potential to age beautifully in the cellar for a few more years.

🍽️ Food Pairing: A marvellous pairing to slow-roasted goat, enhancing the rich flavours of the dish.
