Rapsani Old Vines 2020, Dougos Winery
Date Tasted: 12/2024
Rapsani is a renowned wine region in northern Greece, nestled on the southern slopes of Mount Olympus, the mythical home of the Greek gods. This unique terroir benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with cool mountain breezes and abundant sunshine, creating ideal conditions for viticulture. The region is famous for its PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) red wines, crafted primarily from a blend of indigenous grape varieties: Xinomavro, Krassato, and Stavroto. Compared to the other regions where Xinomavro is the dominant grape variety, Rapsani probably produces the most elegant and sophisticated version.
🍷 Appearance: Pale ruby.
👃 Nose: A captivating and terroir-driven bouquet with layers of aromas that transport you to the Mediterranean. Notes of black olives, sun-dried tomatoes, ripe cherries, oregano, thyme, cinnamon, and clove create a vivid sense of place.
👅 Palate: Medium-bodied, showcasing vibrant acidity and an intense medley of Mediterranean flavours. Tomato paste, olives, fresh herbs, and a touch of salted meat dominate the profile. The high tannins are polished, providing structure. The balance is excellent.
💞 Finish: Remarkably long and complex, with layers of flavours.
🍷 Drink: Ready to enjoy now, with potential for further ageing over the next 5 years.
🍽️ Food Pairing: A perfect match for dishes like beef bourguignon.
